Why Hands-On Training Matters

I’ve run hundreds of training sessions over the past two decades. The ones that worked all had something in common: people built things. The ones that didn’t? Slides.

The slide deck problem

Most corporate training follows the same pattern. Someone presents for an hour, maybe two. There’s a Q&A. People take notes. A week later, they can’t remember what was covered. Two weeks later, they’re back to doing things the old way.

This isn’t because people are bad learners. It’s because passive consumption doesn’t create durable skills. The research backs this up — constructivist learning theory, spaced practice, the testing effect — it all points the same direction. You learn by doing, not by watching someone else do.

What project-driven learning looks like

At Jumpstart Lab, workshops follow a rhythm. Short theory blocks — fifteen, maybe twenty minutes — give you the mental model you need. Then you work. Extended lab time where you’re solving real problems, building real things, with an expert in the room who can unstick you when you hit a wall.

The instructor’s job during lab time isn’t to lecture. It’s to watch, ask questions, and intervene at exactly the right moment — when you’re stuck enough to be frustrated but not so stuck that you give up. That’s the window where real learning happens.

Why this especially matters for AI

You cannot learn Claude Code from a slide deck. You can’t learn prompt engineering by watching someone else’s prompts. These tools are deeply contextual — they work differently on your codebase, your data, your workflows than they do in a demo.

The only way to develop real fluency is to use AI on your actual problems, with your actual tools, and build the muscle memory of knowing when to trust it and when to push back. A demo can show you what’s possible. Only practice can make it yours.

The metric that matters

Here’s the test I use: when someone finishes a workshop, can they do something tomorrow that they couldn’t do yesterday? Not “do they feel inspired” or “did they enjoy it” — can they actually do the work?

If the answer is yes, the training worked. If the answer is “I took great notes and I’ll try it sometime,” it didn’t. Everything we build at Jumpstart Lab is designed around that test.
