The website is live, the space is reserved, and the tickets are available! The first Jumpstart Lab course, Ruby Jumpstart, will take place on August 1st & 2nd. Since it is a first go, this class is offered at a discounted “BETA” rate, 25% off the full price. Enroll now for just $300 per person.
And there’s something a little special about this workshop.
Recently the Ruby and Rails communities have had some good dialog about gender (in)equality. As a high school teacher, I enjoyed pushing my female students to pursue some of the great opportunities available to women interested in science and technology. I’d like to contribute a little to the effort, too, so this first Ruby Jumpstart is going to be for WOMEN ONLY.
Is this gender discrimination (or “reverse discrimination”)? Yes! So what? Go to any tech conference or computer science course and you’ll find male to female ratios around 9 to 1. I don’t think we “need” at 50/50 split, but it seems unlikely that 9 to 1 is ideal. This is a little step to change that.
So, when you register, please submit a copy of your birth certificate. Just kidding. If you self-identify as a woman, you’re invited. If you don’t, please come back for one of the next workshops in August.
Cool?
We believe in diversity and support these and other organizations doing the same:

I’ve been doing Ruby workshops for women in San Francisco (sfrubyworkshops.com), and it’s been fantastic. Good for you for expanding the idea.
BTW, I had to click through to EventBrite before I found out what part of the country you’re in! If you weren’t 3000 miles away I’d suggest a collaboration. :)
